JJ Thomson pedestrian and cycleway

The cycling and pedestrian access route along JJ Thomson Avenue has been adapted while the Whittle Laboratory project takes place.

A new improved cycleway has been built along the east side of the road. This is generally directional and segregated from the footpath. At the new temporary spur road junction adjacent to The William Gates Building, cyclists and pedestrians have priority and cars must give way. This is reinforced with road markings and signage.

All users are asked to take extra care around the crossing points and shared areas, and to respect other road users and contract staff. As expected, Highway Code guidelines apply - pedestrians have priority over cyclists and vehicles, and cyclists have priority over vehicles.

Where the hoarding has made it too narrow for a segregated cycleway and footpath near Madingley Road, a grey coating has been applied to indicate that this is a shared surface for pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists are requested to give way to pedestrians on this shared section. Once the work is completed the segregated cycleway and footpath will be reinstated.

These temporary measures will be in place until mid-2026. The University project team and contractor SDC apologise for any inconvenience caused.
