It is known that a number of buildings within the University of Cambridge built estate have asbestos-containing materials used historically in their construction.
An ongoing programme of specialist asbestos works including asbestos surveys, remediation, removal and disposal are in place to support the safety arrangements for controlling asbestos risk.
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR2012), which sets out the duty to manage asbestos, there is a clear definition of a 'Duty Holder'. It states that if you instruct or allow work to be carried out in a building over which you have a level of control, you must ensure that those carrying out the works are aware of asbestos hazards.
We operate an Asbestos Register Database that details the location of known ACMs.
This information forms an important part of the assessment process for individuals managing risk, including building occupants and persons undertaking building alterations or maintenance. An Asbestos Information Request Service is available to the University community and its stakeholders to support the dissemination and interpretation of the register information.
