Furniture at the FM Logistics storage facility ready for re-use in University of Cambridge offices and classrooms.
The Mill Lane North Programme, facilitated by the University’s Estates Division, involves the relocation of 25 University teams out of the Mill Lane North buildings into new accommodation by July 2027, when the site must be vacated.
Cambridge Digital Humanities (CDH) is among the first to relocate, supported by the Estates Division’s Facilities Management (FM) team. CDH has moved into a bright and characterful, modernised 17th-century building on Trumpington Street.
The new space has been refitted largely using repurposed, high-quality furniture and equipment sourced from the University’s in-house storage facility - one of the core services provided by FM Logistics. This approach has helped minimise relocation costs while reducing waste by reusing items that might otherwise have gone to landfill.
Working closely with CDH colleagues, the FM team ensured the new office met the interdisciplinary research centre’s diverse needs, delivering a fit-for-purpose space with minimal disruption, on time and within budget. The project presented particular challenges due to the building’s Grade II listed status and lack of lift access. However, the team’s flexible approach meant that furniture could be returned and exchanged where needed, ensuring the final layout worked effectively for the space.
By delivering and installing furniture using in-house teams rather than external contractors, FM Logistics also reduced travel emissions and packaging waste—further supporting the University’s sustainability goals.
Staff, students and academics at CDH are already benefiting from their new environment, which offers a welcoming and functional space for working, studying, supervising and now they have the space to host events. Access to shared areas, including a staff room and garden, has enhanced the overall experience and created new opportunities for socialising and relaxation.

Karen Herbane, CDH Learning and Events Manager, praised both the process and the outcome of their new space:
“From start to finish, the FM Logistics team provided a personal and professional service. From sourcing repurposed furniture, to the quick turnaround at short notice to deliver crates, to being on standby to support last-minute changes—including swapping out furniture that didn’t quite work—their flexibility was invaluable. We are beyond pleased with both the set-up and our new space.” Karen Herbane, CDH Learning and Events Manager, praised both the process and the outcome of their new space:
