This month grounds maintenance for the operational estate moved to an in-house service, focused on providing a higher quality and more efficient service to meet the needs of our estate.

Grounds Manager Mark Coulson said, “Since the in-house team looked after most of the sites 12 years ago, there have been many changes. We will be looking after an area that covers from Madingley to Whittlesford and Ely to Addenbrooke's Hospital.

“We are currently recruiting for new positions that should be in place before the start of the new growing season, and will spend 2024 working hard to bring reacquired sites up to their usual high standards.”

The  team will also support the University’s vision for biodiversity - to enhance and protect our natural environment for future generations.

Mark Jermy, Head Grounds Supervisor for Cambridge West, has worked very closely with the Environmental Sustainability team. During the last 5 years this has included more than 2,000 square metres of wildflower meadows and areas of rewilding.

Alison Bunn, Head of Workplace Services, said, “I am really pleased the decision has been taken to bring the grounds maintenance service in-house. This gives us an opportunity to invest in the team and the service they provide to ensure the University grounds look colourful and well-kept.”
