A delivery was made today (Thursday 6 June) of two new electric pool cars for use by Estates Division staff.
The vehicles feature an attractive new University branded car wrap that highlights the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability and improving air quality.
Aiming for 100% electric University-owned vehicles by 2030 (where suitable vehicles are available) is a commitment made in the University’s Transport Strategy 2019-2024.
Estates Division is on track to meet the 2030 commitment for all fleet vehicles to be electric. Conversion of the fleet reduces the emission of diesel particulates, which improves local air quality and reduces the impact on respiratory health and mortality.
The vehicles are used mainly within the city to transport staff and equipment to service the buildings. Most of the vans are charged at the Laundry Farm site overnight. The environmental impact of the fleet is being managed by vehicle telematics which provide data on mileage and routes as well as utilisation.
Andrew Smart, Director of Estate Operations said, “Today’s delivery of two new electric cars is an important step in reducing our environmental impact and making our estate operations environmentally sustainable. Not only that but they look great with a prominent University logo and branding.”
Estates Division has a dedicated Fleet Manager and is working to develop a fleet management strategy. A focus on leasing rather than buying vehicles allows vans and cars to be replaced more
regularly and a faster conversion to 100% electric.
In addition to Estates Division, 25 University departments have a current total of 59 vehicles. Levels of electrification between departments vary, but the ED Fleet Manager is on hand to provide advice and support.
