Asbestos Awareness Training must be given to all employees who could potentially come into contact with or disturb asbestos during their work (Regulation 10, CAR2012).
Within the University this could include (but is not limited to) the following trades, irrespective of the Department they work for:
- General maintenance staff
- Computer and telecommunications installers
- Gas fitters
- Painters and decorators
- Workshop and laboratory managers
- Building and facilities managers
- Heating and ventilation engineers
- Fire and burglar alarm installers
- Safety Officers, Supervisors and persons within a Department influencing how works are carried out.
- Any other trades meeting the criteria of the HSE ACoP 'Managing and working with asbestos’ L143
A key objective of Asbestos Awareness Training is to provide guidance on how to avoid disturbing asbestos materials. Only Estate Management approved asbestos specialists are permitted to work with asbestos in University controlled buildings.
i) University Training Arrangements
The Health & Safety Office provides guidance on training and has a programme of asbestos awareness and refresher training. Training should form part of a Department’s own local asbestos management arrangements.
Please see University Safety Office for further information.
ii) Estate Management Internal Arrangements
A variety of courses are undertaken by EM staff specific to their job role:
Asbestos awareness training
Awareness training with asbestos product recognition
Asbestos awareness for Project Managers
Senior Manager training
iii) External Contactors and Consultants
All persons carrying out work affecting University buildings must receive asbestos training appropriate to the type of work they are carrying out. This must meet the requirements of ACOP L143 'Managing and working with asbestos’, or any superseding official guidance. The University will stop any work, if it is discovered that site operatives are not adequately trained.
